Nellie Kirby Obituary

Timmonsville, SC - Nellie Langston Kirby, 96, widow of Randall L. Kirby who she walked beside for over fifty years, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020.

A funeral services will be Friday, June 12, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, Timmonsville, social distancing will be observed. Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery.  Due to the regulations those that wish to sign the register may visit Layton-Anderson Funeral between 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Spencer and Georgie Carter Langston.  She was a graduate of Sardis High School and was awarded the DAR Medal for outstanding character.  She was employed by Wentworth Manufacturing Company, Lake City, SC until the plant closed in the 1970’s.   Her motto for life was to be the “wife of noble character ..worth far more than rubies” referred to in Proverbs 31:10.  She accomplished this by dedicating her life to God, her church and her family.  She was an active member of Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, Timmonsville, served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon’s wife, and choir member for many years.  She was known for her baking skills, landscaped yard, and flowers.   During her younger years, she sewed beautiful dresses for her children and grandchildren. Her prayer to grow old graciously was admirably accomplished.She amazed many with her warmth and unselfishness, sharp memory, and physical agility, managing her finances and riding her lawn mower well into her late eighties.  

She leaves one daughter, Rhonda Lee, and her husband, Rudy, of Timmonsville, two granddaughters, Krista Lee of Atlanta, GA and Desiree’ Thomas Jinks and her husband Brian, Grand Praire, Texas.  Mrs. Kirby also has two great grandchildren and a sister, Waylyn Parnell.   Nellie is preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Georgia Kirby- Lutts, five brothers, Theo, William D., Ruel, Carter and Chris Langston, two  sisters, Mary Alma Defee and Opal Shepard.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, 4071  Creek Road, Timmonsville, SC 29161.
