John Moreland Obituary

Florence, SC- John Owen Moreland, 96, transitioned from life on this earth to his eternal home in heaven on Saturday, October 22, 2022, after a short illness.

John was born in Capitol Heights, MD on February 8, 1926, to James Herbert Moreland and Eva Tucker Moreland; he was the second child of 13 siblings.  Those still surviving are Shirley Thompson, Donald (Barbara) Moreland, Richard, (Dee) Moreland and Joseph Moreland.

John graduated from Maryland Park High School in 1942 and soon after drafted to serve in WW11.  He served in Company K, 97th infantry, 9th Division in the U.S. Army in France and Germany under the command of General George Patton receiving 2 Purple Hearts. After his service to our Country, John was honorably discharged and began working for the Department of Defense for over 50 years!

In 1946 John fell in love and married Sarah Regina (Jean) Talley. They were married 72 ½ years before Jean’s passing, February 13, 2020.  John was so devoted to Jean even during her 8 years in Health Care at The Manor, with visits every day!

John & Jean had 2 children, Georgia (Bob) Allen and John David Moreland.  Three Grandchildren, Mark (Shannon) Allen, Jennie (Brian) Davis and Timothy (Kaitlyn) Allen. Seven Great- Grandchildren, Matthew (Sarah) Allen, Andrew Allen, Jeremiah Davis, Anna Davis, Daniel Davis, Lily Davis, and Holden Conner.  And two Great, Great Grandchildren, Adeline Allen and Cody Allen. A blessing from the Lord of 5 generations!

John loved God, family, friends, his church, and Country.  He was a godly example; a kind, generous man who was very involved in the lives of his family and friends. He so enjoyed playing card games with his family & friends and even taught his caregivers how to play rummy! He loved being outdoors, enjoying God’s creation. During strawberry season, John enjoyed picking the berries and he especially liked delivering them to his friends all over Florence.  And during peach season, he would go to the market and buy boxes of peaches and give them to friends. John also enjoyed serving with Pisgah Methodist Church at the Good News Club at Lucy T. Davis; he loved the children and knowing they were hearing of God’s great love for them; he retired from that job at age 90! He found so much joy in serving and giving. He left a beautiful legacy and will be greatly missed.

A Heart-filled thank you to our Comfort Keeper Caregivers and the Rehab Staff and Caregivers at The Presbyterian Community and the wonderful team of Vital Living at Presbyterian Community.
