Henry L. Johnson

Timmonsville, SC - Henry Lee Johnson, 83 passed away Thursday, November 11, 2021 in Florence, SC.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Florence Memorial Gardens.  The family will have a time of visitation from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday evening at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson was born in Hartsville South Carolina, the son of the late Alice Mcfarland and Gloster Johnson. 

After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959 on the USS Hazelwood, Henry met the love of his life, June Marie Fruit that  started as an innocent candy shop encounter that  would later flourish into a love story that would continue to grow for the next 60 years.

Before his retirement in 1993, Henry worked for 32 years as a Mechanical Engineering Technician in the Artillery Armaments Division of Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ. Having a love for sports, Mr. Johnson was the football equipment manager for the Andover Arrows and baseball coach for the Andover Eagles from 1974 to 1979. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman with his best friend, Sammy Laird.

Mr. Johnson, “beloved Father and "Poppy" is survived by his children Brian(Alisha) Johnson, Donna Johnson and Tracy (Lauren)Rainwater, 4 grandchildren whom he and his wife cherished and adored, Chris Norman, Shane Norman, Briana(Collin) Mayer, and Nicole Norman. Others left behind include his cousin Wendy(Robert) Linton, sister-in-law, Debbie(Randy) Kumpf, sister-in-law Beverly (Sammy) Pappas, brother-in-law Jack(the late Carol) Fruit, many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is predeceased in death by his bride June Marie Johnson that past August 18, 2021.  He is preceded in death by brothers, John McFarland, Gloster “Shorty” Johnson and Frankie Johnson.
