Charles Anthony Powers, Sr., age 85 of Sardis, died Wednesday, June 10, 2020. Born February 9, 1935 in Sardis, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Afton & Katherine (Humphrey) Powers.
Shortly after graduating from Sardis High School in 1952, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy and served twenty-four years. During that time, he received the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, and worked on communications, radar and other electrical equipment. His highest honor was serving on the "Operation Deep Freeze" team in Antarctica from 1972-73. Upon retirement in 1976, Charles taught Electronics at Hartsville High School for fifteen years, then worked and retired from Carolina Power & Light in 1997.
Charles was most loved by his wife, Roswitha Powers, his children, Charles "Tony" Powers of Lamar, Charlotte Gilbert and husband Jack of Hartsville, John Powers of Florence, and Janet Roller and husband Matt of Forest City, North Carolina, step-son Mike G. Tarte and his wife Karen of Florence, and his brother "Sonny" Powers of Florence.
Charles was known as "Papa" to his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. With a quiet demeanor, he said very little but enjoyed being around his family. He loved fishing, farming, and monitoring the weather.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-nine years, Janie (Lee).
