William Calvin Mouchette, born July 3, 1926, in Aliceville, Alabama, to Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Mouchette (James Lillian), passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025.
A Funeral honoring the life of William C. Mouchette, will be Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 12:30 in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W Palmetto Street, Florence. Burial will follow at Florence National Cemetery at 2:00p.m. with military honors. The family will speak to those attending the service, one hour prior to the service beginning at 11:30 a.m.
A proud member of the Greatest Generation, Mr. Mouchette served his country in World War II as a U.S. Navy sailor aboard the USS Idaho. He was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered, marking the end of the war.
After returning home, he met the love of his life, Nell Jones, in the fall of 1948 at Livingston State Teachers College. They married on August 19, 1951, beginning a partnership built on faith, love, and devotion.
Mr. Mouchette began his career in education, teaching in Camden, Alabama, for one year before transitioning to work as a bookkeeper for the Cattlemen Association. In 1960, he and his family moved to Linden, Alabama, where he joined Marathon Paper Mill, dedicating over three decades there until his retirement in 1991.
A man of deep faith, he served as both a deacon and elder at Linden Presbyterian Church. After moving to South Carolina in 1996, he became an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where he continued to live out his commitment to service and community.
Mr. Mouchette is survived by his wife of 73 years, Nell; his children, Ann Mouchette Adams (Steve) and Tom Mouchette (Jenny); son-in-law John Mullins; eight beloved grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and nephew David Hogue (Shelia). He was preceded in death by his son, William Calvin Mouchette Jr., and his daughter, Gaynelle Mouchette Mullins. He also leaves behind numerous dear friends and neighbors who were blessed by his warmth and kindness.
The family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by McLeod Hospice.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robert Adams, Patrick Mullins, John Austin Mullins, Bill Mouchette, and grandsons in law Michael Caldwell and William Price.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, 800 Baldwin Rd S, Lake Cormorant, MS 38641, or to a favorite charity of choice.
