Timmonsville – Sarah Louise Smith Layton, 99, died August 30, 2016 at her residence. She was born in McCormick the daughter of the late Grady Berry Smith and Ada Belle Langley Smith. She was the widow of Floyd Leroy "Tubby" Layton. Mrs. Layton became associated with the now Layton-Anderson Funeral Home upon moving to Timmonsville with her husband in 1947. Following the death of her husband in 1965, she became president of Layton-Perry, Inc., which was comprised of the funeral home and a furniture store; and shortly thereafter she became a licensed funeral director. As president she ably led the firm for many years. In 1995 she was honored with being named "Funeral Director of the Year" by the Pee Dee Group of the S.C. Funeral Directors Assn. where she had previously served as group chairperson. Mrs. Layton attended Lander College, Peterson's Business School and she received her nurse's training at Roper School of Nursing. Mrs. Layton served her country during WWII as a civil servant in the Signal Corp. being among the first workers at the Pentagon following its completion. She was a member of Timmonsville United Methodist Church where she faithfully served in many positions. She was a member of Leonora Chapter No. 30 OES, American Legion Auxiliary, Dixie Dames, and many other organizations. Surviving are: her son, Grady Alexander Layton of West Columbia; her daughter Rachel Amanda Clark, of Timmonsville; six grandchildren, Brenna Layton (John) Stogner, Alexandria "Zia" Layton; Micah A. Layton, Amanda Broach, Tracy (Michelle) Powers, and Leigh Ann (Corey) Murphy; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert G. Smith, and her sister Margaret Eubanks. A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Timmonsville United Methodist Church, directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Byrd Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
