December 30, 1925 – August 25, 2024
Ruth Nimon Fagan, age 98, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, at Southland Healthcare Center in Florence, South Carolina. Born in a farmhouse in Brooksville, Alabama to her parents, Leonard Eugene Nimon and Luana Byrd Sorter Nimon. She was the second (surprise) delivery fraternal twin following her brother, Wade Haden. She was married to Hurshell Buford Fagan (Retired USMC) in 1951 until his passing in 1988.
Ruth lived a remarkable full life. She was the quinessential model of her membership in the Greatest Generation. Her US Marine husband served in combat in WWII and Korea, as well as both brothers, and all six brother-in-laws. She enjoyed the vast friends and experiences that she made via different Marine duty stations, living in Macon and Atlanta, Georgia, Camp Lejune, NC and Parris Island, Greenville, Greenwood, and Florence, SC.
She consistently demonstrated the values of honesty, humility, fierce love of family, never playing the victim, and had steadfastness in both character and emotions throughout her life. People from all walks of life "fell in love with her," a sentiment consistently and openly shared by those who knew her.
Throughout her career, Ruth contributed to various fields of endeaver with great commitment. She served for several years as a Civil Service worker at Anniston Ordnance Depot during World War II, where she was instrumental in packaging and shipping ammunition. Her career continued with positions at Florence Electro Motive Manufacturing and Sam's Club, demonstrating her adaptability and strong work ethic. She never was late or missed a day of scheduled work. Ruth also devoted her time as a volunteer at McLeod Regional Medical Center and supported many organizaitions like the VFW, Marine Corps League and St Jude's Hospital..
Ruth was a member of RidgeCrest Baptist Church and later attended Harmony Fellowship. She attended church while growing up but made the committment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior about 50 years ago.
Ruth is survived by her two beloved children, George B. (Debbie) Fagan, Sr. and Steve K. (Wanda) Fagan, Sr., along with her six cherished grandchildren: George "Bruce" (Heather) Fagan, Jr., Sarah Katherine (Jason) Guillian, Lindsay Rae (Ryan) Gyles, Stephanie Luana (Zach) Keefe, Steven K. (Katelyn) Fagan, Jr., and Tyler Daniel (Emily) Fagan. She was also a proud great-grandmother to twelve great-grandchildren: McKenzie Lyn Grice, Ridley Sky Fagan, Nolan Grey Fagan, Maxwell Sayre Gyles, Caroline Ruth Guillian, Virginia "Parker" Guillian, Henry Bruce Guillian, Steven K. "Stevie" Fagan, III, Declan Patrick Fagan, Eden Grace Fagan, Anna Ruth Fagan, and Daniel Richard Fagan.
In additon to her parents she is predeceased by her brothers, Leonard Eugene Nimon, Jr., Fred Nimon, and fraternal twin brother, Wade Haden Nimon. Also, sister-in-laws Dorothy Nimon and Bonnie Nimon.
Known for her strength, kindness, and sense of humor, Ruth's life was a testament to her enduring spirit and commitment to others. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service celebrating Ruth's life will be held on August 30, 2024 at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home in Florence, South Carolina. Visitation will be at 11:00 am with funeral service at 12:15 pm. The burial wil be at Florence National Cemetery at 2:00 pm. . The family invites all who knew her to join them in honoring her memory.
