Obituary

Richard D. "Rick" Walden, 80 of Effingham, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025 in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 12:30 in the chapel at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors will follow in the Florence National Cemetery. The family will have a time of visitation beginning at 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Walden was born in Whigham, Georgia, the son of the late John Byron and Eddie Mae McMillian Walden.  He was a career soldier retiring as a Sergeant Major in US Army.

Rick was a member of Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church.  He was a former Juvenile Victims Advocate 12th Judicial Circuit at the Office of the Solicitor, Former Sergeant Major Judicial Advocate General Corp at US Army, served on Florence County Veterans Affairs, and the Police Athletics League.  He worked with the Veterans Park Memorial establishment.  Rick enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Daisy Stephens Walden; son, Richard D. (Tammy) Walden, II; daughter, Pamala Walden; step-daughters, Loraine Onfroy Dean, Nadine Onfroy, Heather Walker and Beth Walker; brother, Andrew "Mickey" Walden (Rev. Dr. Gloria) Walden; sister, Wanda Woods (Tony) Jenkins; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by a son, Derrick Walden and brother, James "Sonny" Walden.
