(Sr) Hyer
February 21, 1939 – March 29, 2025
Ray A. Hyer, Sr, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon March 29, 2025 in the presence of his loving family.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church, Florence, SC. Burial will follow at the Florence National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family will have a time of visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Mr. Hyer was born in Florence County, to the late James Raymond and Norma Jean Johnson Hyer, but was raised by his beloved grandparents O. Leo and Ora Johnson. He graduated from McClenaghan High School and attended Presbyterian College and USC. He served in the United States Army Security Agency. Upon discharge he was a Conductor with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad until moving to Charlotte, NC as an accountant for Swift and Company. After his grandmother became ill, he returned to Florence and became a Real-estate broker. He ended his career as a remedial math teacher with FSD1. Mr. Hyer enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball, being a Mason and Shriner. He loved Southside Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was an active member of The Outreachers Sunday School Class. Ray was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Pierce Hyer; sons, Richard Kevyn Hyer; Raymond Ashley Hyer, Jr; daughter, Sonya Renee Hyer; brother, Mason Brunson, sisters, Linda (Mike) Kane, Beth Brown and his loving grandchildren, Mazie Grayce Hyer, Devyn McLeod Hyer, Kennedy Rae Hyer, Raymond A. "Trip" Hyer, III.
Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church Building Fund, 1356 S. Pineland Drive, Florence, South Carolina 29501.
