Effingham - Nelson Matthews, 73, died at the McLeod Hospice House on April 20, 2015 after an illness.

A "Going Home Celebration" will be Thursday evening, April 23, 2015, which is Nelson's birthday, at Palmetto Street Church of God, Florence at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will be prior to the service from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Nelson was born in Sumter County, the son of the late Ira and Luvanie Miles Matthews. He was a Supervisor for La-Z-boy of Florence and later retired from Korn Mfg in Sumter as a CNA Operator.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Elwood Richardson Matthews; a daughter, Deborah (Jerry) Shady, Olanta; a brothers, Roy ( NellaRae) Matthews, Lake City; seven grandchildren, Lance (Ray) McLaughlin, Crystal (Josh) Atkinson, Nick Altman, Brandon McLaighlin, Shaine Collins, Wm "Bud" Thompkins, III, Tori Thompkins and one great-grandchild, Brookelyn McLaughlin; two step-sons, Bill (Cindy) Thompkins, Mike (Lynn)Thompkins all of Florence. He is preceded in death by brothers, Ray, Kelly, Alvin and LaRue Matthews; step-daughter, Lois Altman, step-son, Stevie Thompkins and a granddaughter, Jessica McLaughlin.
