Florence, SC- Maynard Walter Slack, 80 of Florence, died Sunday, July 5, 2015.
A Funeral service will be Friday, July 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church,1201 Cherokee Rd, Florence. The family will speak to friends after the service. Interment will be in Amherst, Ohio.
Mr. Slack was born in Amherst, Ohio, the son of the late Albert and Lillian Vanza Slack. Maynard graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation,he joined the DuPont Company at the Circleville, Ohio plant. After five years, he and his family moved to Luxembourg to assist in the opening of a new DuPont facility. After five years in Luxembourg, he was assigned to the Florence, South Carolina plant. During his career, he worked as a Quality Control Supervisor and in Customer Service.
He joined St. Luke Lutheran Church in 1969 and was an active member of the VIP group. He was a charter member of the Swamp Fox Car Club. Maynard joined the Florence Evening Lions Club in 1980.He became a vital part of the club. He served as the president twice, and held numerous positions within the club. He served as Chairman of the Club's Christmas Shopping Project for needy Children. Since he joined the club, he had perfect attendance. He was chosen Lion of the Year in 1985,2000,2002 and 2006.Lion Maynard became a Melvin Jones Fellow and was inducted into the SC Lion's Hall of Fame in Feb. 2012.
Surviving are his wife and high school sweetheart of 58 years, Sara Oertell Slack, Florence; a son, David A.(Lauren)Slack, Marvin, NC; daughter, Susan(Stephen)Strehle, Newport News,VA and four grand-children, Andrew Slack, Matthew Strehle, Anna Slack and Hunter Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Storm Eye Institute, MUSC, 167 Ashley Ave, MSC 676, Charleston, SC 29425 or SC Lions Foundation, 220 Outlet Ponte Blvd Suite –B, Columbia, SC 29210.
