Obituary

Maxie O. Turner, 86, passed away on Saturday afternoon at the Veterans Village in Florence, SC.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Palmetto Street Church of God.  Burial will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens.  The family will have a time of visitation Monday evening, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mr. Turner was born in the Hannah Community of Florence County, to the late Theodore Ellis and Lula Poston Turner.  He attended Palmetto Street Church of God.

Maxie served his country in the United States Air Force.  He retired from DuPont in Control Maintenance.  He will be remembered for his love of sports and was active with Pony League baseball in Florence for many years.  He served as an umpire and referee for basketball and baseball.  He was one of the original founders of the Wendy Hill Fire Department.  Maxie enjoyed his work with The Big Brothers organization of the Pee Dee.

He was an avid Gamecock fan.  During his time in the Air Force he played on the Air Force baseball team.

Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Lib" Norton Turner; brother, Russell (Debbie) Turner and many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by a son, Jody Wayne Turner; six brothers, Ernest, Willie, Albert, Bennie Lee, Harold and Marshall Turner and a sister, Beatrice Chandler.
