Obituary

Timmonsville – Mary Alma Gee Langston, age 78, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2015, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Timmonsville S.C. to the late Marion A. and Evelyn C. Gee. She was preceded in death by her brother, Preston L. Gee. Mary grew up in Timmonsville surrounded by friends and family. She graduated from Timmonsville High School as valedictorian and went on to attend Coker College where she received a degree in Mathematics and graduated Magna Cum Laude. On July 24, 1959, she married her high school sweetheart, Wayne M. Langston, Sr. After relocating to Durham N.C., she began a life-long career dedicated to the education of both children and adults. She later returned to teach in the Timmonsville School System and in 1970, she began a 27 year career at Roy Hudgens Academy. She was recognized numerous times for her innovative teaching style, and in 1985, she was named "Teacher of the Year" by the S. C. Independent School Association. Her dedication to children and education extended to her summers off; in 1979, she started a Summer Recreation Program for Ocean Lakes Campground where she served as director for 10 years. In 1991 she became the director of Camp Sexton, a summer camp run by the Central United Methodist Church of Florence S. C. In 2001, she was honored for her 10 years of service at Camp Sexton and her many other accomplishments with a resolution adopted by the S. C. House of Representatives. Additionally she served on the Board of Trustees for Florence Darlington Technical College from 1993 to 2008. She is survived by her husband, Wayne M. Langston Sr., her children: Wendy (David) Kazcmarek, Cam Langston, and Wayne (Betsy) Langston Jr., and her grandchildren - Way, Pierce and Web. Layton Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 West Palmetto Street, Florence S. C., is assisting the family with arrangements. The visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, August 28, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 1 p.m. August 29, 2015 at Peniel Baptist Church, 4186 Twin Church Road, Timmonsville S. C., where she was a life-long member. The family would like to thank the staff at Elmcroft, The Heritage Home, and Agape Hospice.
