Lucille passed away on August 29, 2024 at age 86 surrounded by family in her home in Florence, South Carolina.
Born in Marietta, South Carolina to Essie Lee Knox and James William Collins (Married January 3, 1925) and granddaughter to Richard Louis Whitmire Knox (Born April 5, 1876) and Sallie Stacks (Born July 18, 1876), Lucy was raised alongside seven siblings on a rural farm, commuting eight miles to school daily. She developed a passion for basketball, achieving a career highlgiht of 56-points in a single game at Slater Marietta High School. Lucy took up golf later in life acheiving multiple club championships at Oakdale Country Club (2000, 2001, 2008, 2007) and Pee Dee Ladies League Golfer of the year (2001-2002) along with several other first place finishes around the state.
Lucy worked as a secretary at a Greenville textile mill, where she met Jack Rothell. Noticing his Thunderbird in the parking lot, she left a note in his lunch box requesting a ride. On July 27, 1962, they were married in Greenville, SC. Lucy and "Big" Jack enjoyed a beautiful life together for 62 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and sister.
