Obituary

Judith “Judy” Powers Walters, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at The Manor of Florence, South Carolina.

She was born on January 21, 1935, to the late Rev. Fred S. Powers and the late Katherine Hicks Powers. She was a graduate of Winthrop College.

Mrs. Walters worked for Florence County School District One, McLeod Regional Medical Center, and managed apartments and storage facilities for her brother.

When she retired, she moved to the beach and enjoyed many years at her favorite place. She will be remembered for her bubbly personality, her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, her love of travel, her green thumb, her gift of playing the piano by ear, and her sense of style.

She was strong in her faith and attended College Park Baptist Church before moving to The Manor. In her later years, Judy faced her diagnosis of dementia with dignity and grace. Though the disease slowly took her memory, it never dimmed her sweet spirit or her capacity for love. She loved everyone.

Surviving are her daughter, Teresa Smith (Charlie); son, Brent Bumgarner; daughter-in-law, Sharon Bumgarner; brother, Billy Powers (Ann); four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Art Walters; her son, Kent Bumgarner; and her sister, Shelby Jean Powers.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful caregivers and staff of The Manor for their exceptional care.

A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, in the chapel of The Manor, 2100 Twin Church Road, Florence, SC 29501. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will be held in Bethany Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The Directors of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home are caring for the family.
