Florence - Carolyn Ham Smith Knight, 83, died at her residence with her family at her side on Monday January 19, 2015.

Funeral Services will be at the First Baptist Church, Florence at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Interment will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Knight was born in Timmonsville, SC, the daughter of the late Charles and Irene Smiley Ham. She Graduated from Timmonsville High School and the College of Commerce in Florence. She was employed under the late Peter D. Hyman, Magistrate of Florence. She became the first woman magistrate of the City and County of Florence, retiring after 32 years of service. Carolyn was a member of the First Baptist Church, Florence where she had been a member for more than 50 years.

Surviving are three children, David Smith, Chino, CA, Robert (Patricia) Smith, Effingham, and daughter, Patty Smith Ousley, Florence; nine grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Knight, three brothers Edward Ham, Woodrow Ham, and Herbert Ham, two sisters, Lillian Anderson and Madeline Gardner.
