Joyce Richardson Hewitt, 95 of Timmonsville, died peacefully on September 27, 2024.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Cherokee Road, Florence. The family will receive visitors and guest beginning at 1:00 at the church. Committal will take place at the Hewitt Family cemetery following the service.
She was born in Southampton, England. Joyce, raised in Totton, was the oldest of seven. She earned her nursing degree at Southampton Royal Hospital. During her nursing service, she met Roland Hewitt while he was stationed in England serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. They were married on February 2 and after completing Roland's service in England, they were briefly stationed in Nebraska. Eventually, Joyce, Roland, and their firstborn son moved to a family farm in Timmonsville. Once in Timmonsville, they added to their family with two girls and a boy and were active with the community, church, and family.
Joyce was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Florence. As an active member of St. Luke, she participated in the Freida Klaus Circle. Joyce was an avid reader, loved history, and being in the garden. She was a member of both the Carolina Garden Club and the Book and Garden Club of Timmonsville. Joyce was a devoted wife, loving mother, and Nannie.
Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband, Roland Troxel Hewitt, junior, as well as her parents, Harry and Florence Richardson, her sisters, Beryl, Enid, and Olive Richardson and two brothers, Dennis and Brian Richardson.
Joyce is survived by her four wonderful children, Tommy (Lois) Hewitt of Timmonsville, Claire (Ivan) Hobbs of Mount Pleasant, Beth (Kirk) Edmonds of Murrells Inlet, and Harry (Tammy) Hewitt of Mount Pleasant.
She is also survived by her ten beloved grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Peebles of Florence, Ashley (Preston) Dawkins of Florence, Emily Hobbs of Mount Pleasant, Andrew (Jordan) McCarthy of Charleston, Todd Hewitt of Charleston, Jamie (Luke) Ogletree of Lexington, Heather (Charles) Williams of Florence, Logan (Kelly) Hewitt of Mount Pleasant, Mary Margaret (Adam) LaRoche of Mount Pleasant and Will Hewitt of Mount Pleasant. In addition, Joyce leaves behind 18 precious great-grandchildren who she loved very much. She is also survived by her brother Mark (Teresa) Richardson who still resides in England, and a very special brother-in-law Jerry (Vicki) Hewitt.
Joyce, Mom, Nannie loved being in the garden and watching the humming birds, she loved the Lord and made sure her family understood the importance of having a relationship with Him. She was also known for singing a tune and dancing around the kitchen and taught how a cup of hot tea cures what ails you. Her legacy and life lessons will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
