James Russell Hill, 92 of Timmonsville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 9, 2024 after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 13, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will have a time of visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the church before the service.

Born in the Sardis community of Florence County, he was the son of the late Foster and Annie Oliver Hill.  Mr. Hill lived his entire life on the family farm.  He loved to plant and watch things grow.  He farmed full time at different times of his life and was an avid gardener.  After retirement, he was a carpenter for several years assisting many neighbors with repairs.  Prior to retirement, he worked as an independent snack distributor.

A dedicated member of Sardis Baptist Church, James Russell served in several different roles including: Sunday School director, deacon, treasurer, and a member of the building and grounds committee.

Mr. Hill is survived by his four children; Dianne (Elwood) Anderson, Rusty (Donna) Hill, Bobby (Joyce) Hill and Terri Melton; sister, Emma Jean Skinner;  seven, grandchildren, Melanie Rivers, Amy (Keith) Holloran, Amanda (Grant) McGee, Robby Hill, Beau (Dee' L) Anderson, Ryan (Haley) Hill, Hillary Melton; ten great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five and a half years at the time of her death in 2015, Evelyn Sansbury Hill; three sisters, Marion Anderson, Violet Knight and Rebecca Kirby.
