Obituary

Florence- Jacqueline Gibson Thigpen passed away on December 14, 2015 after a long illness. Born December 8th 1921, 1922, 1923 or 1924 depending upon which year she'd admit to; she led a vibrant life centered on love of family, friends, co-workers and travel. She worked at the Pee Dee State Bank in Timmonsville, SC as a teller for twenty years. She remarked that it was the best job in the world and she was never happier than during her time there. Her charm along with her wit and deadpan humor endeared her to all who met her. Upon retirement from the bank, she nearly missed her first trip to Europe because none of her documents had matching birth years and she only obtained a passport at the last minute. She loved to dance and told stories of how, when she was a young teenager traveling shows would come through town. These shows would hold dance contests, which (according to her) she'd always win. When she was offered work with one of these troupes, she was only stopped by her oldest sister coming to take her back home before the troupe left town. Born one of nine children to the late Mr. James Logan Gibson and Margaret Ham Gibson of Timmonsville, SC she was predeceased by her husband, Claude; three sisters, Myrtle, Sue Nell, and Elizabeth, and four brothers, Fred, James, Clyde and Thad. Mrs. Hope Paschal of Florence is the one remaining sibling. In addition to her sister, she is survived by her only child, Craig S. Gibson (né Thigpen) and his husband, Les Brown, of Palm Springs, CA; and many loving nieces and nephews. A member of the First Baptist Church of Timmonsville for over 60 years, she continued to drive herself from her residence in Florence back to Timmonsville for church and for the two bridge clubs in which she was active until she was 89. The family will receive friends at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto Street, Florence SC. on Thursday evening, December 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Services celebrating her life will be held on Friday, December 18 at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery, Florence. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.laytonandersonfh.com
