Henry Phillip Lynch: A Life of Service and Story

Henry Phillip Lynch, known to all as Phillip, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, at the age of 77.

Devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Phillip will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born on March 22, 1946, Phillip was the son of Hoyt Lynch and Elizabeth Strickland Lynch. He was the last surviving member of his close-knit family, which included five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his three sons, Kelvin Lynch and Douglas Hanlin of San Francisco and Fletcher Lynch of Timmonsville; his granddaughter, Brook Lynch, also of Timmonsville; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Phillip Lynch ("Little Phillip").

Phillip's life was marked by a deep sense of service. He served his country with honor in Vietnam, forever cherishing his time as part of the military community. Following his military service, Phillip embarked on a career as a long-haul truck driver, crisscrossing the country and collecting a wealth of stories and experiences to share along the way.

His true passion, however, lay in landscaping. He possessed an uncanny talent for transforming ordinary spaces into vibrant landscapes, and his skills were highly sought after in Florence and surrounding counties. He was retired from Francis Marion University where he worked as a groundskeeper.

Phillip lived by the motto, "You've got to keep moving," and he remained active until his final days. He loved sharing stories of his encounters with celebrities like Elvis Presley and Joe Lewis, his travels across the globe, and the simple joys of everyday life.

He was a man of many facets. Phillip had strong opinions and unwavering principles, yet his heart overflowed with kindness and compassion. He was a pillar of strength for his family and a loyal friend to many and he will be dearly missed.

A  Memorial Service to celebrate Phillip's life will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel of  Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29501. Interment of his cremains will follow the service in the Florence National Cemetery.
