Harriet McMillan Hill , passed away Thursday, October 24, 2024, surrounded by love ones.
The family will receive friends Sunday, October 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 28 with interment following in Lamar Cemetery, Lamar, SC.
Harriet was born in Lamar, SC and was the daughter of the late Claude McMillan and Lucile Warr McMillan. She was a graduate of Lamar High School,and she graduated from Limestone College with a degree in Education. In 1961 she married the love of her life, Jesse Hill, and they were inseparable for 56 years until his death in 2017.
Harriet served as a teacher for several years and later worked as a stay at home Mom and served alongside Jesse during his many years as a Baptist minister in various locations in NC and SC. Later, they were owners of a Radio Shack store in Marion, SC before retiring to Cartersville, SC.
Harriet dedicated her life to serving God and serving others. She loved her friends and family deeply, especially her precious grandchildren, and she was a "second Mom" to many young people throughout the years. The doors of her home were always open.
Harriet loved music. She played piano, marimba, vibraphone, and even the steel drum. She and Jesse also loved to dance and never missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and soon to be a great-grandmother.
Mrs. Hill was preceded in death her husband, Jesse G. Hill, Jr.
She is survived by two daughters, and their families: Laura Hill Johnson, her husband Kyle Johnson, and their children, Claudia Johnson (partner,Samuel Hynds) and Eric Johnson; Susan Hill Mason, her husband Bill Mason, and their children, Amanda Mason Salazar (husband Joe Salazar) and Gwen Mason. She is also survived by Rex Sappenfield, who was like a son to her, and by several nieces and nephews.
