Florence, SC – Derrell Benjamin Matthews, 75, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 after an illness in a local hospital facility.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Florence. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon before the service at the Funeral Home.  A private burial will be at Florence Memorial gardens.

Mr, Matthews was born in Darlington, SC, the son of the late Clyde and Sallie Mae Langston Matthews.  He served his country in the US NAVY.  Derrell was the owner of  Palmetto Drive Shaft.  He attended Florence-Darlington Tech, receiving Certification in Welding.  He enjoyed building and working with his hands.  Other pass-times included, Country Music, spending time at the beach, reading and studying about airplanes.

He was married to the late Sandra Rae Copeland Matthews.

Surviving are; a son, Steven (Meredith) Matthews; two sisters, Brenda Matthews, Mary (Thad) Galloway and his two beautiful granddaughters, Elliott Rae and Alma Ripley Matthews.  He is preceded in death by his brothers, Terrell Matthews, which was his twin and Emmett Matthews.
