Timmonsville - John David Matthews, 77, died early on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015 in a hospice facility in Florence.

Funeral services will be at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Elim Baptist Church Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Matthews was born in Florence County, the son of the late Moultrie and Ruth Lee Matthews. David was a member of Elim Baptist Church. He was a farmer, and enjoyed carpentry. His wife, children and grandchildren were the joy of his life. He loved gardening, watching it grow and sharing with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Barbara Lynch Matthews,Timmonsville; two sons, John "Craig"(Dawn) Matthews, Darlington, Walter "Stacy" (Andrea) Matthews, Timmonsville;a daughter, Chasti (Michael) Wright, Timmonsville; a brother, Moultrie (Lynette) Matthews,Timmonsville; five grandchildren, Aaron Matthews, Quinton Matthews, Kaitlyn Matthews, Josh Wright and Alayna Wright. The family would like to thank a special caregiver Ernestine Baker for the care given to Mr. Matthews during this time. He is preceded in death by a brother,LeRoy Matthews.
