Florence, SC - David Wayne Hamill, 72, husband of Karen Hamill, died June 16, 2024 at his home in Florence, SC.

He was the son of the late Samuel Hamill and Barbara Scott Hamill.

Dave received an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from UCLA, and then his Doctor of Optometry degree from University of California at Berkeley. It was at Berkeley he made true life-long friends. Their group founded their own Fantasy Football League which is still going strong over 40 years later. This "hobby" bought him so much joy, mostly because it kept him tied to his friends.

Dave was very passionate about his career. He truly found his place in the world that he loved. He was very instrumental with optometry associations on the state and national levels. He found fulfillment by helping patients to see their world better. He even joined the US Air Force as a captain and took care of our troops at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. Lastly he started and grew his own practice in Florence.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 28 years are his brother, Paul Hamill and his wife Jane, and his mother-in-law, Annie Rose Stuck.

Preceding Dave in death are his daughter, Erin Hamill and his sister, Bonnie Hamill Silva.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Layton Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto St., Florence. SC, Rev. Mike Watson will be officiating. Immediately following, all are invited to a celebration of Dave's life at Cru Wine and Tap, 122 West Evans Street, Florence, SC 29501. The Celebration of Life will be following the service.
