Cooper Dean McKenzie, age 80, of Florence, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and dear friends after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Florence County, SC, he was a son of the late Eugene Daniel and Earl Lee Suggs McKenzie. He was raised with a deep appreciation for family, faith, and country, Dean lived a life marked by service, friendship, and devotion to those he loved most. He proudly served his nation in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard a destroyer, carrying the values of duty and honor throughout his life. Later, he joined the Air National Guard and served eighteen additional years and was a Gulf War veteran as well.
In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his beloved son, Daniel McKenzie.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Wanda McKenzie, whose love and companionship were the foundation of his life. He is also survived by his cherished granddaughter, Carolina McKenzie of Florence; along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly and will treasure his memory for years to come. Survived by sisters, Carolyn Gravitt of Heath Springs SC and Janet Bowers (Don) of Lancaster, SC and a brother, Ervin (Bo) McKenzie (Tammy) of Sumter SC.
Dean found great joy in spending time with family and friends. He loved music and playing his guitar. He loved hunting, fishing, and the occasional round of golf—especially when it meant sharing time with those he cared about. One of the highlights of his days was gathering with his early morning coffee group, a circle of friends, whose support and kindness meant so much to Dean and his family throughout his illness.
Those who knew Dean will remember his warm heart, his steady presence, and the love he showed to family and friends alike. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dean's friends, caregivers, and all who offered support, prayers, and comfort during his battle with cancer. Dean will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A funeral service to honor his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
