Obituary

Barbara Green McElveen, 84, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Born in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late A. Barney Green and the late Ethel Faircloth Green.

Barbara graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1959. She furthered her education through the Institute of Financial Education, the Consumer Lending Schools in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Mortgage Lending School at the University of South Carolina. She began her career at Tyler Plywood in Florence, where she worked from 1959 to 1967. She then embarked on a distinguished 40-year career in banking, serving as Branch Manager for Security Federal Savings & Loan, Investors Savings & Loan, and First Federal Savings & Loan, before retiring in 2007.

A devoted member of Southside Baptist Church since 1962, Barbara faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher, business committee member, and in many other roles throughout the years. She was also actively involved in her community, serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the Breakfast Optimist Club and as a member of the Florence Civitan Club. Through her work, church, and community involvement, she formed lasting friendships and touched many lives with her kindness and dedication.

Barbara had a deep love for music, enjoyed attending shows, and especially cherished going to Carolina Gamecock games with her daughter and great-granddaughter. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, and brought joy to those around her. Above all, time spent with her family was what she treasured most.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Wesley F. McElveen, Jr.; her daughter, Susan McElveen Walters; her granddaughter, Brandi Stewart Duperry (Michael); her great-granddaughter, Kaylah Stewart; and her sister, Shirley Green Hill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kim McElveen Youmans (Paul).

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the McLeod Hospice House for their compassionate care. They also extend special thanks to Shirley Hill, Dana Reynolds McAlister, Angela McNeil, Kim Rogers Turner, Robin Hill Turner, and Connie Penny Waters for their love and support.

A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in the chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
