Florence, SC- Joan Hill, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018 after a two year battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cartersville Cemetery near Timmonsville, SC. The family will have a time of visitation beginning at 1:00 at the Funeral Home.
Joan was born in the Cartersville Community of Florence County, the oldest of six daughters born to the late Joseph Chester and Josie Hodge Hill. She attended Timmonsville schools, graduating in 1952. Joan attended a business school in White Oak, N.C. and in 1953 attended Montreat College in Montreat, NC. She began her career at Carolina Life Insurance Co. in Columbia. For ten years, Joan served as a secretary to Congressman John L. McMillian in Florence and Washington, DC. Joan ended her career in retail at Stein Mart in Florence, SC. Entertainment was her passion. She was fortunate to be able to perform in many venues, including soloist on radio and TV and also, with her sisters (The Hill Sisters). There were many events when Joan represented Timmonsville, as an ambassador in beauty pageants including Miss SC. She was a member of Cartersville Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sisters, Barbara (Bob) Wilkinson, Cecelia Taylor, Grace Rogers, Mary Beth (Phil) Farmer; and her nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Hamblen and brothers-in-law, Tom Taylor and Larry Hamblen.
